Yesterday for lunch we had the last tomato of the 2014 season. Back in the fall before the freeze I harvested about a bushel of green tomatoes from the vines. Those tomatoes were spread on racks in the basement and slowly ripened. Twila used some of the green ones to make a green tomato relish that went in gift baskets at Christmas. Not all of those tomatoes ripened, some spoiled, but we've enjoyed a few at a time all winter. Two weeks ago we put the last of the crop on the kitchen window sill and yesterday we sliced the last one. We shared the 4 slices and made enjoyed a tomato sandwich. Certainly the quality wasn't as good as a summer tomato but that little tomato provides a spark of hope for the upcoming growing season.
The cabbage seedlings in the basement are growing nicely and looking at the calendar it's almost time to start the big three summer transplants: tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. According to the almanac, the moon is in Cancer on Feb 28th and Mar 1st. Cancer is a watery sign, insures quick germination and abundant yields. So gather your seeds and supplies and get ready to plant.
